Good People: Chapter 12: Expanding Thinking Horizons

Chapter 12

Shaan eagerly waited for Kelly. Lately he had been thinking about her a lot. He wondered why? He answered to self, “Perhaps because she is an independent thinker. Perhaps because she is very beautiful. Perhaps because of both.”

While he was engrossed in such thoughts, Kelly entered his apartment; the door to his apartment was open. Kelly presumed it was because he was expecting her.

Shaan was so much immersed in thinking about her; he did not notice her arrival. Kelly felt amused at his concentration on something that she was not aware of. She smiled and got curious to know of Shaan’s inner thoughts.

After waiting for a while she coughed delicately to attract his attention. He was startled. He blurted out, “Hey there. I am sorry I did not notice you. Please come on in.”

“No. I won’t come in. Let us get going or else we will be late. And why were you so much lost that you did not notice a beautiful girl? Did I disturb you in the middle of something very important?”

“Oh, nothing really. Not at all,” He replied awkwardly. He dismissed further conversation on this topic. He exhibited a bit of shyness. It did not escape Kelly’s observation of him.

As they sat in Kelly’s red colored Porsche, Kelly said, “Shaan, let me fill you in with stuff about the group we will be meeting today. We call the group as ‘Humanity Forum’.”

“OK, go ahead. You own a brilliant car.”

“Oh, it’s my mom’s. Thanks anyways. Let me now tell you about this group called ‘Humanity Forum’. Right now it’s a group of some 45 odd people in San Jose. The group got evolved gradually over past five to six years. They are a youngish set. These guys are highly open-minded, intelligent and active. They are proponents of very high human values. We are totally boundary less group; we do not draw any kind of boundaries between the human beings. Guys and girls from various professionals and religious backgrounds have come together in this group. So we have engineers, doctors, scientists, professors, business executives, lawyers, politicians and so on. And we have atheists, agnostics, Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Sikhs and the religion-less. We have whites, blacks, yellows, browns and all kinds of mixed or other conceivable colors. We have people who originally belonged to different nations. Their mother tongues are different from each other. In short everyone is welcome provided he or she is a humanist with large mind and heart, can question every established thing, is flexible and willing to change for better, provided he or she thinks, feels and does good for self and others and provided he is a genuine human being.”

“Coming from such diverse backgrounds of different nationalities, races, colors, religions, faiths, beliefs, languages and professions, do they really see eye to eye with each other? Or do they always end up in agreeing to disagree? What really makes your group tick?”

“You are right. Basically each one is unique.”

“That’s my exact point. In order to execute any idea, first people must come to a common ground. This kind of uniqueness can be a serious impediment in consensus building.”

“The uniqueness brings in lots of scenarios and alternatives. But with clarity and unity of our objectives, with openness of mind, flexibility and transparency, process of consensus building becomes quite smooth. People are aware of incompleteness, inadequacies and deficiencies of their cultural, ethnic and religious learnings and so they pick up the best from everywhere and everyone in order to arrive at a common platform. They invariably subordinate the incomplete, inaccurate, deficient, inadequate and often misinterpreted commandments and dogmas of their cultures and religions in favor of one single thing that binds them together which is ‘humanity’. Everything gets focused towards ‘humanity’ ultimately.”

“Interesting. But do you really find species of this nature- it’s a tall order. You seem to be aiming at zero hatred-100% love affair. It is rather extremely difficult proposition.” Shaan interjected.

“You are right. Not many people in the world will come forward and meet these credentials as of the current times. That’s the reason over five to six years we are just about 45 people in the group. But the people are changing for better though painfully sluggishly. But there is still hope.”

“Yes, I can see that.”

“Hope the world and its people will change one day and large numbers of people will carry forward the work we have started with still better spirit than we have inculcated.”

“I hope for the same.”

“So are you game to meet them?”

“Definitely. I look forward to meet them.”

By this time they reached a school’s premises.

Kelly informed Shaan, “We hire the school’s conference room for our periodic meetings. We meet once a month for an hour ordinarily. The group chose this conference room for three main reasons; first it was conveniently located, second it had a round table and third the hiring charges are absolutely low.”

She further added, “All of us sit around this round table. The advantage of a round table is that there is no one called the head of the table in the seating arrangement of a round table. All the people sitting around it get a level field to play.”

Kelly and Shaan met a group of some forty people in the school’s conference room.

All of them gave an impression of people with substance.

As they settled down, Kelly introduced Shaan to everyone in the group. Everyone welcomed him. Kelly addressed, “Shaan will reside in San Jose for quite some time now. I thought of bringing him here as my guest today. He needed some fellowship, as the poor guy was having no friends as yet. If he likes our group he is most welcome to join us as its permanent fixture. We can now start our tete-a-tete.”

Then the members of the group started sharing their experiences of past one month with each other. Each time a member spoke, Kelly gave his or her racial, religious, educational, professional and family background and country of origin to Shaan.

One of the members reported, “Our finances are in pretty healthy status now. Chairman of Kelly’s company is convinced that our work is benefiting the humanity on the whole and agreed to significantly enhance the allocation of funds to us from his company’s welfare foundation. I met him recently and thanked him for his generosity. I wish USA and the rest of the world had more companies like ‘Super soft Technologies’.”

On hearing this Kelly’s respect for her company shot up. Till now she was impressed with her company’s technological and business acumen. Now she could also see the human and ethical side of the company. She wished how nice it would be if more companies came forward.

A lady from the group took her turn and spoke, “Let me share my experience. Recently the justice department rang our group’s office. Before deciding on a divorce case the judge thought it wise to counsel the family by taking our assistance. The judge was aware of the existence of ‘Humanity Forum’. I took up this task and met the family consisting of husband, wife and their six-year-old child. It’s an inter-religion love marriage. Wife a Hindu and father a Muslim.”

She continued, “In the recent years the husband and the wife started fighting severely over the upbringing of their son. One issue among many was should he eat the food that is restricted in Hindu and Muslim religions. The boy goes to the school and has learnt to eat all kinds of food including all types of meat in the company of his various friends who come from different religious background. Both the parents feel offended when the boy eats the food restricted by their respective religions. The boy is happy eating every conceivable foodstuff. Wife blames husband and husband blames wife for not controlling the child’s affairs that are not in conformance with their individual religions. There are many such other issues too. I am counseling the parents. They see our points of views on these issues. I am in process of counseling. I am hopeful.”

Another member of the group spoke about a rescue operation he along with three of other members of the group carried out. He narrated, “All of you know about the recent fire where we rescued all the residents of some forty five condos.  The residents were primarily low-income people with mixed racial and religious profile. No help came from any religious, social or governmental organizations since the residents did not have much influence over the concerned officials. We have arranged for their make shift shelter. We are also providing the food. Under our guidance the residents have pooled up some money to tide over the current crisis. We are in touch with the insurance company and soon the funds will come in to start the re-construction work.”

Another member said, “Two of us went to Seattle the other weekend. We assisted our Seattle group in their new project of providing medical help to those who were denied medicare cover by their employer companies. We are also in discussion with the insurance companies in this matter.”

Kelly gave some information to Shaan about the formation of such groups in the other cities of USA, “We were the forerunners in forming such a group in San Jose. Then some of our members spread the word to their like-minded friends in some other cities. Some people in the other cities on their own also took clue from us and initiated the work on our pattern. Now such groups have been formed in seven cities of USA whose objective is to work for humanity irrespective of race, religion, cast, creed, color, social or economic status.”

Shaan asked, “Do all the seven groups network with each other and work together?”

“The groups have earmarked the territories for their independent operations. Normally they work within their territories. However, on larger projects or international projects we pool up and work together. The groups have an effective and efficient communication link.”

“How do you manage your time? The group members must be full time professionals. How do they take leave from their jobs? It must be difficult.”

“In each group three to four members are core members who are full time workers of the group. They get their salaries from the group. Others like me use part of our holidays and vacation when we work for the group. We notify these dates to the group and the group calls on us on these dates as per the requirements.”

Some more members shared their experiences with the rest of the group.

One important point that was shared pertained to several incidents of coercive conversion of religions of people. In couple of nations the radicals amongst the majority religion people were forcing the minority religion people to change their religion. The governments of these countries were turning a blind eye to these incidents. ‘Humanity Forum’ was planning to tackle this issue soon as every person on the earth has a right to choose and follow his religion, faith and beliefs within the constitutional provisions of the countries. The forced conversions from one religion to other religion should be totally stopped everywhere in the world.

After about an hour, the meeting concluded. Everyone shook hands and dispersed.

Shaan and Kelly sat in Kelly’s car and they drove towards Shaan’s apartment. Shaan objected to it, “Kelly, let us to go to some decent restaurant instead. I do not wish to cook and I need some company for my dinner. Can I request you to be my company?”

This was the first time Shaan made such a request to Kelly.

Shelly was generous, she said, “I have no problem. I haven’t eaten out for quite some time. So I accept your invitation. Let me inform my mom and dad.”

Kelly called home from her cell. “Hey dad, how come you have mom’s cell?”

“She is in the kitchen. Her cell was lying here in the living room as usual. I will give it to her. Hang on.”

“Dad, listen. Don’t wait for me for the dinner. I will eat out. Now give to mom.”

Then she heard daddy saying, “Yin, Kelly wants to speak with you.”

As she heard a “hi” from her mother, she spoke, “You remember I had mentioned to you a guy….”

“Shaan?”

“Yes. He has invited me to join him for dinner. We are eating at ‘Greens’. So see you after dinner. Don’t wait for me. And you and dad should eat in time. Bye.”

Kelly loved her legal parents immensely as much as she had loved her real mom Christie.

“Enjoy yourself.”

“Thanks, Yin. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Kelly turned towards Shaan and chirped, “Come on, let us go.”

Shaan was pleased.

Good People: Chapter 10: Romantic Scenarios

Chapter 10

Mumbai’s international airport can become nightmarishly disorganized and chaotic in the nights due to sudden influx of unimaginably large numbers of people. The reason for this is that most of the important international flights depart at night at all kinds of odd and indecent hours.

Shaan’s flight was to take off at 11.30 PM. Considering the other odd hours at which flights take off from Mumbai, 11.30 PM was reasonably decent time.

Giving allowance for the time lost in maneuvering the ocean of humanity at Mumbai airport and with the menace of multiple security checks and other manmade bureaucracy, one needs to reach Mumbai airport three hours before the flight departure time. Shaan reached Mumbai airport at 8.30 PM.

The long line at the entrance to the airport at Mumbai can easily discourage any mortal to cancel his plans.

Like many others Shaan was courageous too. He joined the line. And so, after combating all the procedures of the airport when he settled down in the airplane boarding area, his eyes fell on a familiar looking female figure.

He thought to himself, “Am I imagining? Or is that female really Medhavi?”

While he was contemplating all this, the female in question turned and her full face was visible to Shaan. She also met eyes with Shaan’s but quickly turned away her gaze.

“She is pretending again. Pretention seems to be in her blood. She is pretending as if she did not see me. She is trying to dodge me very cleverly,” Shaan thought.

On the other hand Medhavi was taken aback by this unexpected appearance of Shaan. If any person she wanted to meet least was Shaan.  She decided on the spur of the moment, “I must not allow Shaan to see me or meet me any more.” And she moved away from there so that she was out of his sight.

Shaan visited some bookstores on the airport before boarding was announced.

He then tried to look out for Medhavi but could not locate her. He had no problem meeting her at the airport and speaking with her.

On the other hand Medhavi was avoiding him. She sat at a place in the boarding area from where she could observe Shaan’s movements but Shaan could not have seen her.

As the boarding was announced all the passengers formed a line and started moving towards the airplane. Shaan stood almost towards the tail end of the line. He entered the airplane and reached his seat. Then after shoving his hand baggage in the overhead lockers, he settled down in the seat allotted to him.

A lady was sitting next to him occupying the window seat. She was busy adjusting herself and did not notice her co-passenger. Same way Shaan had not noticed her till then. And almost simultaneously they turned their faces to each other and both were taken aback.

Shaan exclaimed, “Hi”.

“Hi,” Medhavi replied a bit sheepishly. She knew that she was avoiding Shaan all along and Shaan had understood it.

Therefore to save her face she said, “You are a very funny person. You had declared your love to me and met my parents. Then you were supposed to meet them again to know their mind on the matter. My parents were expecting you but you never turned up nor you had the decency to inform us your intentions. I wish I had not met you like this here. I never again wanted to meet a cheat like you.” Offence is always a good strategy of defense.

Medhavi’s words poured anger towards Shaan. She did it deliberately. She was a first rate actor.

And she was genuinely angry too. Her parents had already decided to declare their denial to give Medhavi’s hand to Shaan in marriage. Medhavi had seconded their decision without any resistance whatsoever. In fact that was Medhavi’s own idea right from beginning. So she very much wanted Shaan to go to their house and meet her parents where her parents would outright refuse Shaan’s proposal of marrying her.

She wanted to see Shaan’s defeat. She wanted him to lose her this way by facing severe humiliation. That would have settled the score. But since Shaan did not visit them any more, she had not been able to achieve her intentions. She had a very strong reason to be frustrated and angry with Shaan.

Medhavi started getting up from her seat. She collected her purse and requested Shaan to make way for her to get out. She said, “I will sit elsewhere. I do not wish to spoil my first journey to USA by sitting near a deceiver. Please let me get out.”

Shaan remained unaffected by her tantrums. He said, “Medhavi, if you do not like my company then I will go sit somewhere else. You need not have to do that. But do tell me about your meeting with Anji before I go from here. I know that you had met Anji immediately after I left your home that day after meeting your parents.”

“I never met Anji that day or later. What rot you are talking about?”

“Please don’t tell a lie this blatantly. Let me now tell you that I was there on the rocks near the lake when you shared with Anji your victory over me. That was the reason I did not meet you and your parents. Hope you understand me now. Bye.”

Medhavi cursed herself for being so reckless that day. She should have been careful enough to make sure that no one was around them when she leaked her secret to Anji. She felt very horrible now thinking that Shaan must be thinking her to be stupid. She was anguished that her smartness did not work with Shaan. Shaan scored over her again.

She was almost in tears because of her yet another defeat.

Before Medhavi could utter anything, Shaan went towards a vacant seat far away from the present one. Medhavi and Shaan did not meet each other or spoke with each other till they reached Los Angeles.

At LA airport commonly known as LAX, once again by sheer accident they took their position side by side along the baggage carousel to claim their baggage. They were not aware that they stood so close to each other. Both were concentrating on the conveyor.

Medhavi’s bag arrived earlier. It was quite a huge bag and she could not manage to get it off the carousel. When Shaan saw that the lady positioned next to him was not in a position to pick up her bag, he picked it up and handed it over to her. Then he saw that the lady was none other than Medhavi. They were destined to meet once again.

Instead of thanking Shaan Medhavi exploded, “You need not show off your chivalry. I won’t be impressed now, nor was I ever impressed earlier. I could have managed.”

In the mean time Shaan’s bag arrived. But he waited. He knew that Medhavi was waiting for her second bag since she had not walked away after securing her first bag.

He stood near the carousel.

As her second bag arrived, Medhavi almost tumbled down in the process of retrieving the bag from the carousel. Shaan picked up the bag with one hand and with the other he somehow managed to save Medhavi from falling on the carousel. A serious accident was avoided. Yet she could not escape some bruises.

Shaan took her to one side and made her sit on a bench nearby. She was in a kind of slight trauma. Her leg was hurt pretty badly and the blood started oozing out.

Shaan tied his handkerchief around her wound. He gave her some water to drink. He asked her to lie down on the bench. She was in a bit of daze and she followed all the instructions of Shaan quite obediently.

Shaan then collected his own bag and the bags of Medhavi on two trolleys and brought them near the bench where Medhavi was resting.

Soon Medhavi started feeling better. She said, “I am thankful to you. I better get going now.”

“It is not advisable to travel alone in this condition. I will escort you up to your destination. Can you tell me where?”

Medhavi was in no position to fight with him.

She replied to Shaan, “University of California. I will do my MS there. I am going to stay with Anji. She also took admission for MS at the same university. She came here a few days ago and fixed up an apartment with the help of her relatives in LA. I will share the apartment with her.”

“Let us go then. I will drop you there and then be back at the airport to catch the flight to San Jose. Luckily the layover time is sufficient for me to drop you and return in time for the next flight.”

“No, don’t bother. I have the exact directions from Anji to reach the apartment near the university. I can manage.”

“How can you manage on your own? You are still limping. I can see that you cannot even walk properly. I insist that I come with you.”

“OK. I think that suits me. OK.” Her leg started paining now.

Then they got into a cab.  Medhavi gave the address to the cab driver. After a few minutes of silence Medhavi took the initiative. She was curious.

“Came on business?” She asked.

“How do you know?”

“I kept track. I know that you started your own company ‘Soft Act’. Am I right? So I guessed it might be in connection with that.”

“Yes. It’s ‘Soft Act’. I have a meeting with a prospective client in San Jose tomorrow. Hope it works.”

Then there was a lull for a very long period. Both of them just did not know what more to converse. The previous incidents became a barrier.

As they neared the university, Shaan ultimately spoke, “Medhavi, I do not know if we will meet in life again. So before we part each other, let me tell you that my love for you was absolutely genuine. And after hearing what you told Anji that day I can understand your compulsions. I know that getting into an inter-religion marriage is not easy and so, it is not everyone’s cup of tea. My status was still more complicated- an orphan tagged as Hindu, a child adopted by a Muslim father and a Christian mother, finally a religion less adult. So don’t worry, I have nothing against you.”

As Medhavi was getting out of the taxi, Shaan came out and shook hands with Medhavi saying, “I wish you all the best for your future.”

Before waiting to hear Medhavi’s reply, he got into the taxi and headed back towards LAX.

Medhavi was a bit perplexed at the unbelievably decent behavior of Shaan despite being treated so badly by her. She talked to herself, “It would have been perfectly OK if he had been rough with me. If I was in his position I would have done it.”

As she started walking towards the apartment, she retraced all of what happened from the time she collided with Shaan in the corridor of the college till the present moment and then concluded by saying, “Shaan is weird.”

She realized that Shaan’s handkerchief was still tied around her leg. She untied it. She wanted to throw it away as she did not want to have anything of Shaan’s with her- neither his handkerchief nor his memory.

But for some reason unknown to her, she kept it in her purse before she knocked the apartment’s door.

Anji came out and hugged her, “Welcome to America dear Medhavi. Tell me everything of your long journey.”

Medhavi shared every detail except any mention of Shaan.

Good People: Chapter 9: Contemporary

Chapter 9

Shaan decided to concentrate on his career. He also decided to forget Medhavi. Forgetting Medhavi wasn’t easy but he knew, “Time is a great healer.” He also thought that he was in love with an image and the real Medhavi was not even closer to that image.

When Shaan graduated in computer engineering, information technology (IT) and Internet wave caught up the entire world. It was Shaan’s strong point too.

He started his own software development company ‘Soft Act’. He had decided not to attend any more employment interviews in his country. He had no time and inclination to explain to every recruiter why he remained religion less.

Around this time American IT companies were on look out for low cost IT service providers all over the world. They were identifying the countries where there was talent and in addition those talented experts also had a good grip on English language. After an in-depth and extensive search they zeroed in on India as one of few countries in the world that could provide such deadly combination- the talent that could speak and write English and provide IT service and expertise at a low cost.

Shaan’s company ‘Soft Act’ found this thinking of US companies as a potent opportunity. It started scouting around for some good professional tie-ups with the American companies.

That’s how Shaan got in touch with Kelly. ‘Super Soft Technologies’ of USA was on look out for an outsourcing partner from India. It had shortlisted few companies of India. Shaan’s ‘Soft Act’ was one of those few.

Kelly was in charge of the project for which ‘Super Soft Technologies’ was on look out for an outsourcing partner. They had been exchanging some preliminary correspondence on this issue.

Now she wrote an email to Shaan saying, “Hey Shaan, how about a teleconference the next Monday, your 10 PM?”

Shaan was quite pleased to receive this invitation; in fact he was keenly looking forward to this kind of communication from Kelly. He responded immediately, “Hey Kelly, it’s OK with me.”

He keenly looked forward to the next Monday 10 PM.

On Monday at 10 PM in India, Shaan’s phone rang. He picked it up with a greeting, “Is that you Kelly?”

“Yes, Shaan. Let us get down to business. Is that OK with you?”

“Perfect,” Shaan replied.

Then they exchanged a whole lot of business related information with each other. It lasted almost forty minutes. Towards the end of the meeting Shaan asked her, “Do you need anything else? Like my more detailed personal profile.”

Kelly was surprised, “Why, you gave me everything about you and your company. I know your professional background and your technical and business strengths. I think that’s it. I have full picture of you. Thanks and bye.”

“Thanks Kelly, bye.”

After the conclusion of the teleconference, Shaan was almost shocked to realize that Kelly genuinely did not want to probe into any of his personal details. It was so much different from what he had experienced in his various interviews in India. The interviewer always got interested to know petty personal details of the interviewee. Some did it blatantly and others did it indirectly. But they did. And Shaan’s background of being an orphan, being an adopted son and legal parents having two different faiths did not go in his favor. On top of it he always declared that he was religion less. Finally it did not work out most of the times even in his business meetings. Earlier it had never worked out during his college days too.

A week later, Shaan got a detailed formal email from Kelly inviting him for a personal meeting in her office. Her office was located in the famous Silicon Valley. The exact place- San Jose.

All along Shaan carried in his heart a strong desire to travel to America and particularly visit the great places that literally are the beacons to the whole world in terms of information technology. In Shaan’s opinion San Jose was definitely one of such places.

Shaan’s secretary put forth the following preliminary facts of San Jose to Shaan.

Located in the west coast of America, San Jose is the largest city in Silicon Valley. It is also the third largest city of California after Los Angeles and San Diego. It is the tenth largest in the entire USA. It is in true sense a global city as it attracts people from all over the world. And all of them live in harmony in San Jose.

San Jose got its name as Silicon Valley because it is the hub of many IT companies, computer and microprocessor companies and the companies belonging to high technology and engineering.

Shaan felt excitement with the idea of going to USA and San Jose.

Good People: Chapter 4: A Unique Story

Chapter 4

Shaan was guiding Medhavi in her studies and was falling in love with her.

Medhavi was learning fast how to study better and score better grades. But she was not falling in love with Shaan. She pretended to be falling in love with Shaan though.

She knew that falling in love with Shaan was futile. They could never marry each other. She was a devout Hindu. Her parents were far more devout Hindus. And she had researched Shaan inside out. She knew that a Christian-Muslim couple had adopted Shaan. She did not know his religion though. This situation would never be acceptable to her and more so to her parents. So why fall into the love-trap?

She had a theory about falling in love. She was far intelligent to know that one does not fall in love but one decides to fall in love with the right candidate. And under the circumstances, she decided not to fall in love with Shaan howsoever attractive he was. But in some corner of her heart, she wasn’t too happy with her decision. Yet!

The association of Shaan with Medhavi started showing its impact on her grades. She mischievously started contemplating her ultimate success as the topper in the university. She had spent all these years dreaming about that position but Shaan always proved to be the obstacle she couldn’t ever cross. Now Shaan himself was her mentor and the sacrificial goat.

She needed to motivate him more to spend more time with her and seek the continued guidance she ever needed. One day while they were studying together she suddenly held him by her arms and planted a kiss on Shaan’s lips.

It was unexpected but Shaan always wanted it to happen. He was falling in love. Though a bit taken aback by her sudden attack, he managed to give a grand response. Whatever he did, he always did brilliantly.

“How very silly of me? I shouldn’t have done it. Now I feel shy of what I did and a bit ashamed too. But Shaan, you were brilliant. How many girls did you kiss earlier? How do you achieve such perfection in everything you do?”

“I am glad you liked. Don’t worry. It was my first kiss. But I have mastered the theory and I was just looking out for its implementation. Thanks for giving me a chance.”

“By the way, how do you master your theory?”

“No jokes. I read a lot and observe a lot.”

“Whatever. But one thing is sure, you are a man enough.”

Shaan managed to blush.

And their study sessions continued a little longer every day after this day.

Medhavi was winning and Shaan was losing a bit every day. He was getting much less time to do his own studies. It was just his strong will power that made him to cut down on his sleeping hours so that he could put in more time towards his studies in his hostel room.

Good People: Chapter 1: Path Breaking Novel and Love Story with a Difference

Chapter 1

The placement building of Indian School of Science, Engineering and Technology (ISSET) was buzzing with activities and excitement. It was the day of nerds among the student community of the college. The top-notch companies would pick up some of the most precious and genius of them at astronomical salaries. It was rumored that the last heard highest salary offered to one graduate engineering student was close to equivalent of $100,000 per annum. That was thought to be a great salary for a fresher in India by any imagination.

ISSET was famous for attracting the best students, the best professors and the best recruiters. And ISSET really did it.

Over 500,000 students took the entrance test every year for admissions to ISSET. It was one of the toughest entrance test administered by any institute in India. The cream of the cream of the country competed. But finally ISSET admitted only 600 odd students for its 5 engineering branches. Thus the ratio of the number of students applied for admission to ISSET to those who got finally selected was 833:1. In short entry into ISSET was a tough proposition.

Professors of ISSET constituted the top academicians. In their heydays several business organizations attempted to lure them by offering unheard of salaries and perquisites but their love for teaching and research was so enormous they preferred to hang on to ISSET.

The recruiters who visited ISSET were the most sought after companies who headhunted the best talent at the lowest cost of recruitment. Campus recruitment at ISSET met this objective of such companies in the best way. While every other institute used to beg such companies to visit their campuses and select the students, ISSET dictated the terms over these companies. The recruiting companies had to meet certain minimum criteria to qualify to make it to the ISSET campus. And the criteria to qualify as the zero-day recruiter (i.e. companies who were called on the first day of the recruitment session in the campus) was the toughest.

Good companies always tried their best to be the zero-day recruiters at ISSET campus. Their stock went up.

‘Advanced Tech Systems’ qualified as the zero-day recruiter. They called very selected students for the interview, the cut-off GPA being 3.5. Very few students of the college could meet this criterion.

Shaan with 3.8 GPA, the highest GPA secured by any student in the current year, was presently in the interview room.

‘Advanced Tech Systems’ was one of the most reputed companies of India. Matching its reputation was Shaan, the brightest student. He was seated in front of its selection team. The interview team of the company consisted of its two technical managers and its human resource manager.

The interview progressed. When it was more than half way through and the interview team was beginning to get highly impressed by Shaan’s replies, the human resource manager saw something peculiar in Shaan’s application form. He pointed it out to his two colleagues. Then they got into a private conference. It appeared as if they decided to pause the technical part of the interview because human resource manager took over.

He returned the application form to Shaan. He commented, “You haven’t filled up the form fully. ‘Your Religion’ column has been left blank by you.”

Shaan replied, “I do not know my religion. My early childhood was nurtured in an orphanage that was run by a Hindu. Later a couple adopted me. My mother is a Christian and my father is a Muslim (Moslem). I do not know the religions of the persons who actually gave birth to me. The in-charge of the orphanage guesses that my parents might have been Hindus. I don’t know what is his basis to say so. But on the certificate he gave to my legal parents he wrote my religion as Hindu. All you know my biological parents could have been Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist or Sikh or some others. Now, you tell me my religion.”

The HR manager got interested in this unique situation of Shaan. “How have you done so far without any religion? Didn’t your parents choose one of their religions for you? I am sure they must have decided one of their religions for you for all the official purposes. That is needed everywhere.”

“It has been quite a tough job for them. So sometimes I was a Christian and other times I was a Muslim. Despite their many efforts to sort out their own conflicts on the matter they could not decide for me. And the certificate from the orphanage indicated me as a Hindu and they wouldn’t accept it either. But I did quite well despite all of this confusion. I ate as good as a Hindu or Muslim or a Sikh or a Christian or a Buddhist or any other. I slept quite like anyone of them. I read and sing as good as anyone of them do.”

HR manager gave a smile and asked, “Whom did you worship?”

“I used to worship numerous Hindu Gods while at the orphanage because everyone in the orphanage did. Then after my adoption, I prayed Allah in the company of my father and Jesus Christ in the company of my mother. So all the gods of the world must be either pleased with me or possibly they may be having conflicts among themselves on my account. And they must be as confused as I had been till late.”

“You mean to say that some clarity emerged lately? Then which religion you have embraced finally?”

“None. I realized that I could do as well without any religion tagged to me. I feel liberated. I experience freedom all the time. I need not have to perform any or many of the unnecessary and unwanted rituals prescribed by various religions. I can eat all kinds of things that are human food and which I like without any restrictions or guilt. I can wear all sorts of clothes that please me and do not offend others. I can use all kinds of salutations to greet the people. I can walk into all the religious places on the earth and admire the beauty of those places equally well without any partiality. And I do not miss them either or do not feel guilty of not visiting them for days, months and years together. Yet, I can still speak truth. I can still be kind towards all the people. I respect everyone including myself. I still do not steal and I am not corrupt. I do not possess any intention of grabbing other’s property or wife. I still do not think of waging a war or killing anyone. I do not think or do badly for anyone in any way. So don’t you think I am fine without any religion?”

HR manager looked puzzled. After thinking for a while he said, “Well, I don’t know. I can’t think of any person without a religion. And I am afraid we cannot accept your application form without filling up this mandatory column of religion. Our computer just wouldn’t process it. I am extremely sorry. Please write either your father’s religion or that of your mother’s. Or you can as well write your religion as Hindu since you have that kind of certificate from the orphanage. Then it will be OK.”

Shaan spoke, “After enjoying the liberation that I have been experiencing lately without getting into the maze of all kinds of religions, I do not wish to get stuck with one just for sake of a job in a company. I appreciate your compulsions that you are bound by your company policies. It’s all right with me.”

“Please do not misunderstand us. We are not compelling you in any way. It’s just that we wanted our records to be complete. For now you can go. The interview is over. We will inform you our decision after interviewing other candidates. Thanks for showing your interest in our company.”

Shaan thanked them, shook hands with the three interviewers and came out. He wore a broad smile on his face particularly while re-reading the “Advanced” part of the name of the company from the interview letter in his file.

Later that day he came to know that ‘Advanced Tech Systems’ bypassed him to select other students with lower GPA but with other considerations.

This was not the only time Shaan had to go through this kind of experience. Even later on, in every job interview in the campus or at employer company’s office, he faced the same. But he did not get annoyed. He understood the predicament of the people of this world well. They could not fathom anyone without an affiliation to some organized religion. They also could not easily accept the background of Shaan- first an orphan and later adopted by a Muslim father and a Christian mother. Quite a checkered stuff. And so if they found a candidate who was more regular type and they invariably found one, they would prefer him to Shaan.

Any way, Shaan had already decided to breathe the air of freedom and decided to remain a pure human being without being further classified and sub-classified by religion, caste, sub-caste and sub-sub-caste. Yusuf and Alice- Shaan’s legal parents- had recently conferred with him on this delicate matter and they had allowed him to choose the religion of his choice. That’s when he decided.

One evening after the dinner, Shaan’s mother Alice and father Yusuf called him to their bedroom.

Alice said, “Shaan, while it’s quite late already, we do not wish to make it worse. We need to give you a religion. Your dad and I were very scared to discuss this issue between us for fear of getting into a serious conflict and losing each other and in turn you. In bringing you up, we could not decide on many issues. While marrying each other and in adopting you we had no problems but later we had serious differences of opinions regarding some rituals. Should you be ‘circumcised’ like a Muslim or ‘baptized’ like a Christian or like a Hindu should you be administered through ‘yagyopavit’ or ‘upnayan’? Then there was the question of what you should eat or not eat- each religion has some restrictions and some permission. Which ways you should pray and should you pray Allah or Jesus Christ? We argued a lot and finally gave up keeping the matter pending for decision at a later date. We went on postponing decisions on such matters and also your affiliation to any religion.”

She further added, “So we pretended that everything was going on fine. But now you are on the threshold of launching your adult life and many things would depend on this decision. So we took certain decision for you. I will request your dad to tell you our decision.”

Then Alice turned to Yusuf and requested, “Yusuf, I want you to tell our decision to Shaan.”

Shaan’s father spoke, “Shaan, when we brought you home from the orphanage, we got a certificate saying that you are a Hindu. Orphanage in-charge by way of his previous experiences deduced this. Many times the mother or the father or both or any other guardian who left their children in that orphanage incognito later claimed their child and at that time the orphanage in-charge used to come to know that they were all Hindus. As if people knew that that orphanage was meant for Hindus. Now it is somewhat difficult to accept such a reasoning or argument, yet what the orphanage in-charge told made some sense to your mother and me. Therefore we want you to adopt Hindu religion for your future life.”

Shaan went near his parents and held their palms in his own. He was quite overwhelmed. He gathered courage to speak out, “Mom and dad, you are very good people. You are extraordinary. I am very lucky to have you as my parents.  You brought me up so well that I never missed anything in my life. Least of all a religion. Religion thing is so insignificant for me because of your upbringing. Did it ever bother you that I was a Hindu? Or did it bother you that mom is a Christian? And did it bother mom that you are a Muslim? You showed me all along that we all can live together in harmony if we live together just like good human beings. That counts the most.”

Shaan’s father spoke again, “But Shaan, you will need a religion. People are going to be curious about it in your future life more and more. Your would-be wife will like to know. Your employers may be interested in it. If you happen to contest for any public post in future, the public will like to vote for a person of their faith. It is just about pragmatic to ally with a religion. Therefore your mother and I urge you to embrace Hinduism.”

Shaan replied, “Dad, you and mom are excellent people. You are so very broadminded; I haven’t yet come across people like you. I am sure that you will be willing to give me the freedom to decide in the matter.”

“Yes. You have total freedom in the matter,” Shaan’s mother confirmed.

“I have thought a lot about this thing myself. I have read a lot of related literature and also observed the people around me. I am abreast of what the people of the world are doing with the religious divide. While no religion prescribes it but in reality religions are becoming the excuses for the human beings to fall apart from each other rather than they uniting them. It even results in the extreme behaviors of hatred, bloodshed and wars.”

Shaan paused and then continued, “Also If I stick to just one religion, despite my being liberal with many aspects of life I am likely to subconsciously or consciously imbibe its inherent inadvertent narrowness conflicting with the broader essence of humanity. Or there is a threat of other people of my accepted religion expecting the practice of that narrowness from me. Under the circumstance I do not wish to get branded with any one religion though I have no contempt for the people who follow any particular religion, as it is their human right. I just wish to be a good human being. Please give me your blessings.”

Shaan’s parents’ eyes welled up with tears- the tears of pride for their son. They squeezed Shaan’s palms and nodded in agreement. They took him in their embrace for a long time.

Thus Shaan decided not to attach himself to any organized religion. Soon he defined a guiding principle for his life.
